Achievements in life has nothing to do with education, certificates, experience. It is all about how you think, decisions you made that really make the difference. In Dream Turners, I will help you to achieve your dreams!
My Story: How I became a Singapore’s gardening ambassador…
I was very interested in plants since young, but my education path led me to study electrical engineering in Singapore’s top technology university, Nanyang Technological University. After graduation, I was working in a multi-national company as a IT engineer. Long hours, stress and heavy workload, I don’t have time for my hobbies.
I always had a dream, a childhood dream to own a garden of my own. Land is scarce in Singapore and no way I can afford to buy one. Owning a garden means I can grow plants that I like, but I will not have the time and energy to maintain it. My parents and friends were not supportive at that time, telling me that it is impossible to own a land and no knowledge of horticulture and gardening.
I thought hard, but I am really passionate of what I want to do. Because I know what I want, I manage to come out with a way to own a garden without spending a single cent. One fine day, I finally made a decision to call up the National Parks Board and express my interest to set up a garden. They were really friendly and told me that they were all ready to help me out with expertise and skills! But they told me that you need to get a piece of land! Many would have given up, but I was so close to setting up my dream garden and an idea struck me. I can set up my garden in a school! Where students will get to learn from the plants I grew in my garden and help out in the maintenance of the garden! Though I was not the owner, but I could give ideas of my gardens to the school teachers who will help out in getting it set up! And in 2 months’ time, I had a great garden with plants that I like. I have picked up gardening knowledge and experience through setting up this dream garden and I had started to go around conducting talks and workshops to the general public in libraries and community centres.
The following year, I was nominated as a Gardening Ambassador by the National Parks Board. I continue with my talks and workshops, and also helping out in gardening projects with others schools and gardening groups, sharing my experiences and tips on growing plants and maintaining gardens. From that day onwards, I know that everyone can be successful. Everyone had the winning formula in them to make ourselves succeed. And this blog is all about helping you to unlock the winning potential.
