How to get someone to do anything for you…

Do you believe that you have the power and ability to get someone to do things that you want them to do? Yes! If you apply the right skills and the right message, they will work for you! The technique is a secret tool, or rather something that is subtle and require some analysis to bring our the characteristics of this existence of the secret technique.

You can easily find numerous books on persuasion and influence people, and they all have their own views and analysis of effective persuasion and influence. I stumbled upon a book that sums all up and put everything right in place. The book, Influence: Science and Practice (5th Edition) pieces the puzzle altogether. The book introduces the six “weapons of influence”. These are power techniques that can be so powerful that you can get people to do anything.

Consistency and Commitment. Another principle observe in almost everyday life. People can be conditioned that a certain belief is true or convinced about your opinions and in turn build their own.Once people start believing, they are committed to them and doing things consistently that relate back to their beliefs and commitment.

The Law of Reciprocity. This is a common technique you see in marketing, where companies give out free samples, trial periods of their products and know that people will come back and purchase the product, sometimes just to return the favor. It is also a form of human behavior, which build trust and relationships.

Social Proof. One of the strongest methodologies in social behavior. Simple way to describe it will be m=”monkey see, monkey do.” In many social activities when people faced uncertainties or doubts on anything, they tend to follow those who have been done it before and follow the crowd. You can observe this behavior from many marketing plans where they talk about positive experience or reviews and show videos or pictures of people using the product. Or when everyone is using the same mobile phone and others will tend to think that phone is one of the best and will eventually get one for themselves.

Scarcity. Another word that bears the same meaning “Exclusive”. People tend to do things when those things are exclusive. It can be either Time scarcity, “Limited time offer!” or Quantity scarcity which is like “2 left!” or “limited edition! 5 in the whole world” Marketers used this technique frequently as they work like magic on its own.

Liking. People tend to do things that they like, right? Same goes for anything, you tend to be easily influenced or believed in people you like. So if you can make yourself “likeable”, it will be easier to influence other people!

Authority. People tend to be believe in people of higher authority. Like you will trust professionals in their own fields. Like advertisements showing doctors and dentists promoting products, people tend to buy these recommended products. But in actual fact, these “doctors” or “dentists” are just actors!

With this six weapons of influence, I am sure you can get more out of it from other people!

This book, Influence: Science and Practice (5th Edition) is available in Amazon through this link. Author of this book, Robert Cialdini is a renowned psychologists in the field of influence and persuasion. Do get one and find out more of the concepts and ways to persuade and influence others!

Quick guide to save more money…

Saving money can be an incredible feat for many people. Our lives are full of enticing clothes, cool gadgets and fancy cars. Many will be eager to own them, giving them the gratification and social status. However, when looking at savings or cashflows, you will find many of them are in debt and no savings at all. Many of my friends are like that, they own cars, wear branded luxury clothes, own several designers bags and even multiple colors of similar bags! And they have told me that they have no extra money for their saving accounts. To start saving, you will need to develop habits that will help you reach your financial goals.

Savings are not for people who are poor and had a hard time earning money. Look at the tycoons around the world and you will see many of them are actually super savers. I had two friends who are pretty wealthy, but they had different spending habits. One managed to get a good sum of money and bought himself a $250,000 BMW Z4 Roadster, and I asked him why. “I like sports car and I got it since I can afford it”. Around the same time, the other friend of mine got the same amount of money, but instead of spending it immediately, he invested it in something else. After a few years, he is driving a Lamborghini! “I liked the BMW Z4, but if I can wait for a while and leverage my cash abit, I can actually own Lamborghini in a few years time.” The best thing is he can still easily afford another BMW Z4 if he wanted to!

See the difference? Being wealthy and rich is not about earning big bucks, it is the wisdom of using your money well. Saving money is one of the first few steps to financial wisdom. Here are some ways you can learn from the super savers:

Delayed Gratification.

Super savers do not believe in buying something when they decided to. Things that cost a huge sum of money need careful planning and many will save up so that they can pay upfront and avoid interest charges. Delaying your purchases also give you time to “cool down” and consider whether you really need item or not.

Cut your expenses.

Reduce your expenses equals saving more money. There are many ways to reduce your expenses. So take some time and sit down to review through your monthly expenses. Find things that are you don’t really “need” and stop any expenses on such things. Spend only on essentials and turn your expenses into fruitful investments.

Create budgets.

Super savers are really good at setting up budgets for themselves. Start planning your budget by tracking expenses and incomes in a month and categorize them into logical categories like groceries, entertainment etc. Know how much to assign to and spend within the limits. Excess cash should go to the saving accounts and not to other budgets. Again, budgets have to be in fine details, so that you get the most of out it.

Research your purchases.

Don’t buy on first sight when you have plans to buy something. Always do some research, by going to several shopping malls or online and compare prices. Consider the quality and price that will suit your needs and last you for a long period of time. Such great deals will help you to cut away some cash for savings.

Set financial goals.

Goal setting is a MUST for any successful individuals. You will not achieve anything if you don’t have specific goals. Super savers sets very detailed goals and work hard to achieve them.Start by eliminating your debts, set firm deadlines and work towards them.

Respect your savings account.

Your saving account is not your cash cow!  Don’t let it be something that you can raid it or empty it for some unnecessary purchase. If you are saving up for a house, you should not be using the funds to buy  a new car! Dedicate your savings to a particular purpose and develop some discipline on how you use the money.

Controlling your state of mind…

What kind of emotion do you feel when you watch a scene on the TV when a man walking towards a deserted house with some eerie background music? You will feel a chill ran down your spine and expect something back to happen right? Your state of mind in that moment is uncertainty and fearful, this is because such scenes and music are associated with these negative feelings, since many horror movies are like that. This is what we called anchoring, a certain experience will trigger a certain kind of response. Let’s say now, we change the background music to some party rock and heavy metal, you will immediately change your feelings from fear to exciting!

Another example is to imagine a giant lemon right in front of you, it is bright yellow and when you cut it, the lemon juice oozes out on to the skin. Have you notice that you are salivating more now? That’s anchoring too! When you go swimming at the beach and you imagine yourself swimming with a background music from the movie Jaws, will you swim quickly back to shore, because the sudden fear that a shark might attack you anytime? Yeah, you have just witness the powerful effect of anchoring.

We can leverage the use of anchoring to motivate ourselves, set ourselves in the correct state of mind that will energize us to overcome obstacles and take actions to achieve your goals. A great panoramic picture of a calm blue sea can give you quick relief to reduce your anxiety and relax yourself. So you can use an internal image of the calm blue sea to help you to achieve that state of mind. Or you can find a picture of your dream car, and it helps you to motivate you to stop procrastinating and get on to make more money!

All you need is to identify the  state of mind you want to be in. Here is how you create an anchor effectively:

  1. Decide the state of mind you want to anchor. Like being calm or motivated.
  2. Identify an anchor that you wish to trigger that state.
  3. Recall a situation or memory where you can experience that state.
  4. Activate your anchor whenever you experience that state, like when you feel happy, look at your family photo as anchor.
  5. Put the anchor away when your state of mind start to fade.
  6. Repeat again and each time do make the experience more vivid, you feel more happy every time you look at your family photo. This strengthens and amplify the effect of the anchor.
  7. Apply the anchor over the next few days and  check that the state of mind occurs.
  8. Repeat again and again. Apply it whenever you have the opportunity.
  9. There you have it! A new anchor!

Anchoring is an interesting technique used by psychological experts and only recently used for personal development in this area called Neurolinguistic Programming Techniques, which optimize our minds into the state where we can perform effectively. To learn more about anchoring techniques, here are some great books that I personally reference to regularly: Unlimited Power : The New Science Of Personal Achievement and Bettering Yourself Through NLP (Shape Your Life and Achieve Anything You Want Using Neurolinguistic Programming Techniques)

Conquering Discouragement

Every now and then, life turns her back on us. Well, that’s inevitable and we get discouraged. Such discouragements usually live within us over a long period of time, and we tend to be less motivated, less productive and unable to perform at our desirable level. So the trick here is to find out ways to shorten the time of being discouraged and get back on our feet real fast, and continue on our journey to success!

Keep in mind that no matter what your situation is, there’s always a means to improve it.

The best way of conquering discouragement is to get distracted to something else. Though this may not be the best use of your valuable time, but investment like this pays off when you can get back to your activities earlier.

Distractions to overcome discouragement is about occupying yourself in activities you enjoy, doing things that will motivate you. Here are some ways I am going to show you:

Find a hobby. Try out something new and refreshing, something that might interest you will be a good start! Something that will be personally rewarding and pack with a thrill of a new challenge. This will definitely help you to redirect your focus away and allow you to relax.

Indulge yourself in some social activities. Spare some time and go out meeting people. Take a short class or workshop, attend seminars or meet up with friends. Talking to others is therapeutic and calms your inner self. Catch up with your old friends can be gratifying too.

Get someone to motivate you. Everyone needs help every now and then and it is always good to have someone by your side to comfort you and encourage you. Call a close friend or even a family member who will come right over or willing to spend a day with you doing something together.

Involve in volunteering work. Not many people do this but to me, it is one of the best ways to motivate you. By involving in voluntary work, you will know that you can always contribute to others in various means and find satisfaction that you made a difference. It is a rewarding experience which will set you back on course, motivated and energized ready to make a difference for yourself!

Doing any of these are better off than just cooping yourself at home and do nothing. Be creative in your own approaches, and find things to do that may interest you or reward you. Refreshing yourself and re-energize yourself in the shortest time possible will allow you more time to reflect, and rethink on your past ordeals and making sure it will not return to you again. Truly facing them and making a promise to avoid them is part of the journey to success.

Below are some resources of gaining motivation, which will get you exposed to various methods and case studies.
